In these neurodegenerative disorders, the insufficient pineal secretion of melatonin is responsible for the degeneration of neurons in the substantia nigra (Locus niger) and nigrostriatal projection. When the disease is diagnosed, its progression must be stopped by oral administration of melatonin, in the evening at bedtime ; while following the same treatment as for Alzheimer’s disease.
